Caulking & Chinking Installation For Log Homes & Structures

Caulking and Chinking is the process of sealing all of the gaps on a log home or log cabin.  Without caulking and chinking these gaps would let wind, rain and insects into your home leading to log rot and other structural problems you don't want or need.  When installed with backer rod the chinking and/or caulking process can also provide much needed insulation in these gaps to further reduce any possibility of drafts and help your log home or cabin retain the heat and be more energy efficient.

WoodTeks LLC is a log home restoration contractor based out of North Carolina and serving South Carolina, Eastern Tennessee, and Virginia.  We specialize in the proper installation of caulking and chinking for log homes and structures.  From sealing up all of the windows and doors to individually inspecting and sealing every log on your home, including the unseen and hard to reach areas we'll be able to make sure your chinking and/or caulking is installed properly for trouble free service.

Common Problems With Caulking and Chinking

If you've been around a log home much you've no doubt seen gaps or splits in chinking and caulk.  Most of these issues come from installation error.  Many contractors and home owners will go in and just fill all gaps with caulk or chinking no matter how large the gap with as much product as the gap will hold.  It may look good (or not) at first but once the logs start going through seasonal changes and start to move the gaps will spread open again.  The contractor or homeowner may have even used caulk specially formulated for log homes, it doesn't make any difference. In order to prevent this, backer rod must be installed prior to the installation of chink or caulk.  It fills the gap and helps the caulk or chink achieve a bond to the wood.  It also helps the product to perform like it was intended to allowing it to stretch and contract with the seasonal changes of the logs.  We go the extra mile to make sure every home is sealed correctly the FIRST time.

Caulking and Chinking

If you have an older log home or structure then it could be time to have your caulking and chinking inspected and probably replaced if it's been several years.  Log homes built 15-25 years ago or more could benefit from the newer caulking and chinking products that are on the market offering superior adhesion, better insulating properties and are more aesthetically appealing.

We can remove all of the old chinking and caulking, clean the logs thoroughly and then install new caulking and chinking throughout the entire log structure.

Chinking Isn't Just Functional, It Can Be Decorative Too

Chinking keeps your home thermally efficient and helps prevent the loss of heat energy from your home.  It can also be a decorative and design element if you'd like it to be.  Some log home owners opt to use chinking that might be a different color then the logs, others prefer it to match the logs so it's more hidden.  We can also paint the chinking with chink paint.  There are dozens of options when it comes to the decorative appearance of the caulking and chinking for your log home in North Carolina.

Questions About Chinking?

Chinking is the material used to fill the large gaps between the logs in a log home or cabin to seal out water, air, and insects, and to prevent heat loss. It's crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of your home, ensuring it stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and protecting it from potential damage caused by pests and moisture.

Caulking is a flexible sealant used to seal smaller joints and cracks in a log home, such as those around windows, doors, and corners. While chinking is applied to larger gaps and has a textured appearance to match the logs, proper caulking designed for log homes provides a textured finish and is used primarily for small gaps as mentioned above.  We can tell you which is required, after inspecting your log home or cabin.

It's recommended to inspect your chinking and caulking at least once a year, ideally during routine maintenance checks. Look for signs of cracking, peeling, or gaps where the material has pulled away from the logs. Depending on the condition and the quality of the materials used, chinking and caulking may need to be repaired or replaced every 10-15 years.

While some homeowners feel comfortable undertaking this task themselves, professional application is recommended for the best results. Professionals have the right tools, materials, and expertise to ensure that the chinking and caulking are applied correctly, providing maximum protection and longevity.

Modern chinking and caulking materials are typically made from acrylic or latex compounds designed to adhere well to wood, provide flexibility to accommodate log movement, and withstand weathering. These materials come in various colors to match or complement the natural wood tones of your home.

Yes, many manufacturers now offer eco-friendly options for chinking and caulking that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and made from sustainable materials. These options provide an effective seal while being better for the environment and indoor air quality.

Neglecting chinking and caulking maintenance can lead to air and water infiltration, increased energy costs, and potential damage to the logs from rot, mold, and insects. Over time, this can compromise the structural integrity of your home and lead to costly repairs.

Absolutely. Properly applied chinking and caulking significantly reduce air infiltration, one of the primary sources of heat loss in log homes. By sealing gaps and cracks, you can improve your home's energy efficiency, leading to lower heating and cooling costs and a more comfortable living environment.

We recently purchased a log home built in the 80's that was not maintained properly. Jason and his crew replaced logs, media blasted to get rid of old, worn wood, sealed and stained the home. The home was much more efficient this winter and the logs look so refreshed with the new stain. Our home looks as close to new as it could thanks to WoodTeks.

We were looking for someone to strip and stain our log home and we came upon Woodteks. Jason and his crew did a fantastic job. They are very professional. We could not be more pleased with the final outcome. Jason met with us and explained the entire process completely. The logs were stripped and cleaned then our whole house was stained. We had a bad experience once before with a different company's stain crew but Jason's crew did a phenomenal job. No streaks or runs. Very happy that we found them! We would recommend them to anyone who is wanting a professional job and they cleaned up well. We absolutely love the final product.
